Depression: It's More Than Feeling Blue

Depression is more than feeling sad or down or “blue”. Usually these feelings pass in a few days. Depression lingers and can interfere with your daily life. The illness can happen to anyone. Depression is never a “normal” part of life.

Symptoms are different for each person and differ in how often, how severe and how long they last. Some symptoms include:

  • Sad, anxious or “empty” mood
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Reduced appetite and weight loss
  • Increased appetite and weight gain
  • Restlessness and irritability
  • Loss of pleasure and interest in activities once enjoyed
  • Felling guilty, hopeless or worthless

Most people who seek treatment get better. Don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor or health care professional if you think you are having any of these symptoms, even if you think they aren’t serious. They can help you get the treatment you need.

While you are receiving treatment, it is important to stay in contact with you health care team. Make sure you schedule and go to follow up appointments. At these appointments you may be asked about your symptoms. If your symptoms don’t change or you experience new ones, your provider can make changes to your treatment plan to help you feel better.
