Depression: Response (Making Progress)

Depression is more than feeling sad or "blue". Depression can interfere with daily life. Most people who seek treatment can start to make progress toward feeling better. This means they are responding well to treatment.

The Depression Response measure reports on how well clinics help patients with depression feel after they start treatment. This is known as “response”.

  • The average 6-month response rate for all reporting clinics is 12%
  • The average 12-month response rate for all reporting clinics is 9%

Care You Should Expect to Receive
High-quality care for treatment of depression may include medication, talking with a therapist or lifestyle changes. It can take time to find the treatment that works best for you. Receiving a diagnosis, customizing a treatment plan and following up with your doctor are very important. Your provider should ask you to complete the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), also called the PHQ-9, during each visit to see how well your treatment is working.

Symptoms of depression can interfere with a patient’s daily life:

  • lack of appetite or increased appetite
  • sleeping too much or too little
  • loss of interest in once pleasurable activities
  • feeling of hopelessness

How Will This Help Me?
Even patients with severe depression can get better. Our information will show you how many patients were making progress 6 months after starting treatment. We can also show you the number of patients who continued to make progress over a 12 month period.


The Data:

We measure how patients feel based on their responses to the PHQ-9 survey with nine questions. If a patient’s score from the nine questions drops by at least half, that is a sign that treatment is working. This is also known as “response”. The bar charts and percentages below tell you how well clinics perform on this measure. The average 6-month response rate for all reporting clinics is 12%. This means that 12 of 100 patients with depression reported improvement after 6 months of treatment.

High treatment response rates can be a sign of strong clinic performance in depression care. Your clinic may have received a higher or lower rating depending on how many patients reported feeling better at 6 months. Differences in percentages between clinics don’t always reflect the experience or the quality of care you might have as a patient. One suggestion is for you to talk with your provider if you have questions or concerns.

This report is based on services patients received from July 2011 through January 2013.
